Comparison to other programs
|
While beneficial to some degree, most smoking cessation methods deal with only the physical aspect of stopping smoking. Almost all of the studies I reviewed gave different percentages of success.

Cold Turkey
Cold Turkey is usually a last ditch attempt or a spur of the moment thing. Without preparation and a plan a high percentage of people who give up cold turkey fail. The desire and reasons need to be tackled otherwise the first stressful event or social occasion comes along and people start smoking again. Different studies showed between 3% and 7% success.

Nicotine Replacement Therapies
Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT) had between 4.8% and 15.78% success. This averaged out to around 10% success. The upside is they can help some people overcome the physical craving for the nicotine. The downside with NRT is that some people end up addicted to the gum or the patches and for others they have a range of unpleasant side effects. Unfortunately these products do not address the mental or emotional aspect of smoking.

Zyban (antidepressant)
Zyban was initially used to help people with anxiety. Evidence has shown around 7% success rate with the antidepressant pill. Downside is that your brain chemistry is altered and there may be serious side effects. The reasons why people smoke have never really been addressed.

Herbal stop smoking products
There are a range of herbal stop smoking products that may be beneficial but it was difficult to find and studies or trials with significant results. Once again these products do not address the mental or emotional aspect of smoking.

Laser Therapy
Laser therapy deals only with the physical nicotine addiction. It works by applying a low intensity laser beam to specific points (common in acupuncture and acupressure) aimed at increasing relaxation and reducing cravings. There have been no formal studies on the effectiveness of laser therapy. Some people have benefited from Laser Therapy even though it does not address the mental or emotional aspect of smoking.

Hypnosis
The University of Washington School of Medicine reported a 90.6% success rate after 6 month to 3 year follow ups using hypnosis. (2001)
The Journal of Nursing Scholarship showed a study of 71 smokers. They reported those using hypnosis were twice as likely to quit as those who quit on their own. (2005)
Journal of Applied Psychology University of Iowa concluded hypnosis is the most effective way to stop smoking. Combining the results of more than 600 studies involving 72,000 people the results showed hypnosis was three times more effective than nicotine replacement therapies and 15 times more effective than trying to quit alone. (1992)
The most recent study was presented on October 2007 to the American College of Chest Physicians at their annual meeting. The study enrolled 67 smokers. After 6 months 50% of patients who used hypnosis were still smoke free. 25% of patients who went Cold Turkey were still smoke free after 6 months while only 15.78% using NRT methods remained smoke free. The study showed using Hypnosis and NRT together did not increase the success rate.
The study once again reinforced the claim that hypnosis is at least three times more effective than nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, inhalers and tablets.

Our own informal trial involved 30 long term smokers who had
tried various methods to quit in the past with out success.
Think Quit now has 28 from the 30 participants being smoke
free at the 3 month mark. This is approximately 93% success.
An earlier trial with 4 people had 100% success. Using the
same methods in one on one clinic appointments the methods
have achieved 100% success.
